Information and Education

Dedicated to informing & educating Madison County on soil and water conservation

The purpose of the Madison County SWCD is to provide for the conservation, development and proper utilization of the water and soil resources of this county. The Information and Education (I&E) function of the District adds to the accomplishment of this purpose through educational programs in schools, libraries, local communities and newspaper articles. The I&E also provides information through our quarterly newsletter, The Conservation Journal.

The District maintains a reference library consisting of videos, books, and teacher workbooks covering numerous topics of natural resources conservation. Call office for more information.

School Programs

Call, or email, to book a representative to visit your school and talk to your students about how they can help preserve our natural resources!!!  There are many activities available!

Tree Week

Each year during February the Madison County SWCD sells and gives away bundles of trees in conjunction with National Arbor Day Foundation's Arbor Day. We sell bundles of flowering trees for $5. This coming year's Tree Planting Week and the Tree Give-Away is scheduled for February 14-18, 2006.

Annual Banquet

Each year, the Madison County SWCD celebrates the successes of the previous year, recognizes outstanding achievers in the field of conservation, and announces our poster and essay contest winners. This is a chance to welcome new members and visit with old ones. The banquet, in March, is held at the Canton/Madison County Multi-Purpose Complex in Canton, MS. It is attended by many county residents, guests, and elected officials.

Envirothon

Each year during the Spring, hundreds of high school students gather around the state to test their knowledge and skills in the environmental sciences. The Mississippi Envirothon is part of a national program designed to educate and challenge 9th -12th grade students in forestry, wildlife management, water quality, soils, and a current environmental issue.

Project Earth

Project Earth is held each year during the month of June. It is a three-day workshop where educators are informed of issues concerning environmental education. Many qualified presenters speak to teachers on the following topics: water quality, wildlife, soils, environmental curriculums, urban ecology, outdoor classrooms, Best Management Practices as well as conservation of all natural resources.

Conservation Fair

The Madison County SWCD hosts a Conservation Fair each year in October to teach students the importance of conserving our natural resources. The participants are taken on a trail, stopping along the way to learn about forestry, soils, water quality, agricultural crops, wildlife, and recycling. Students from around Madison County are given the opportunity to participate.

Fall Flower and Garden Fest

During the month of October, Madison County SWCD sponsors a tour to the Annual Fall Flower and Garden Fest in Crystal Springs, MS hosted by the Mississippi State University Extension Service Truck Crops Branch Experiment Station. The station draws a large crowd to this event which consists of exhibits, seminars, and extensive flower and vegetable gardens. Gardening enthusiasts are provided information on vegetables, fruits, flowers, and nutrition.

Poster and Essay Contest

The National Association of Conservation District (NACD) holds a poster and essay contest for students grades k-12. Winning entries sent to NACD must first win at the District level and then move on to the Area, State and National levels. The contests are designed to promote consideration of the problems our environment faces and solutions to these problems.
